saint Sebastian Parish was established on September 30, 1930 by His Excellency The Most  Reverend John J. Nilan, D.D., Bishop of Hartford at the request and growing need for a Catholic Church for the Italian Immigrant
population of Middletown, Connecticut. The church was built by the people themselves basing it on the Basilica Church and Mother Church of Saint Sebastian in Melilli (Sicily, Italy) where most of the people had come from.

In 1944, Saint Sebastian School was established. The parish school offers programs for children in Preschool (ages 3, 4 & 5) Kindergarten, and Grades 1- 8. Saint Sebastian School is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

By the mid 1950's the parish had established itself and had grown from an idea of having not only a church but also a parochial school and a parish cemetery. It was during this time that the Diocese of Norwich was established on August 6, 1953. Saint Sebastian Church in Middletown, Connecticut became a part of the Diocese of Norwich where Saint Sebastian Parish remains the Diocese of Norwich's only Italian National Parish.

On September 30, 2005 Saint Sebastian celebrated it's 75th Anniversary Jubilee as a canonically established Parish of the Roman Catholic Church in the Diocese of Norwich. Click on this link to read the Official Statement from the Governor of CT.
